I see him make his daily walk. I see him groom his house, his car, his hair. I see him flash a well tailored smile, mechanized, morning 5 AM smile.
I see him walk down footsteps like someone still stays behind, I see him walk them up as though someone waits inside.
I see him draw curtains lonelier than the footsteps outside. And still he draws it like he needs to protect someone from the sun.
I see him take two cups of coffee and hope someone really stays inside.
I see him the evening speaking to something on his palm and then I see what stayed behind, what waited inside, why the curtains were drawn , why two looked more and why a 5 AM smile is tailored to neat ends.
Loneliness replaces someone with something.
I saw a man do this at an old age home recently. Reading your post made me see him again.
