Love's Postmodern Antics

"Years ago "I begin...you stop me
and continue..."ago over coffee, sweet bun and running nose we felt love"
"No" I replace the verb "We thought love"...
nay..you shake your head sideways... "we mistook lust for love"
But lust and love are  different... you smile at the audacity of hope
and say lust is 'love unacknowledged '
"And love?" I ask
Love is lust acknowledged

I scoop a spoonful sugar, stir my coffee..
see your unbrushed teeth and say "I think I love you..."
You dismiss quick and add"love, there never was love"
and  say"It just was an event, another chaotic event of life..".

Ha .. I say.. and add one more spoonful of sugar...
Taste of coffee hits my taste buds before your words my heart...

I say by tradition taught"You break my heart"
You dismiss again" stitch it up..."
I too feel another stitch wont make a difference..
ha ha.. i say..."so is it over"
"What?" you ask over the cup's rim....
I mean "love"
You laugh again" there was no love ever, we speak the hundredth time'
we just come and go... "no time to savor a kiss."
I use that slip of sentiment and say" oh that first kiss"
You are quicker" I don't remember even the last... Well i remember the smell of your perfume.."
Ha..I say"Then i must be special"
"special? no way... I mean i remember the other women I knew didn't use that perfume..."
A moment of awkward silence....
You say"i hate this silence"
I use that discomfort"perhaps it is the depths of our love"
Ha you dismiss "It is the silence of emptiness..of nothing"
I scoop out two more spoonfuls...
You watch me savor the taste of coffee..
and say "I think you love the coffee..."
I smile, our third child walks past from school
I stitch my heart with another sip....
