Don't know if it had been just to keep wild brats quiet but during a hot summer vacation our elders encouraged us to plant green plants. And a prize was promised for the best tended plant. Now to me that was the first awakening to the knowledge that plants had life. Someone told me they too can feel happy and sad. It was my first experience of tending a plant. I was used to taking care of stray kittens, puppies, fallen squirrels but never had I tended a plant. I was more curious about the prize. My older cousins and my brother were all planting their respective saplings while I stood looking for the best spot on the red soil. Finally I found a place beside a flowering tree and as I planted it I told the tree to take care of my plant. I also remember that every day I watered my sapling. So did my cousins. And of course green hues were also touching us within apart from the green in the plants... (hush..hers is growing faster, no it 's his). I watered mine three times a day and one of my green(not of plant) cousins told me my plant was wheezing and she had heard it. She said it is the cold water I poured three times a day. That gave me a brilliant idea. I started feeding the plant with boiled water sometimes really boiled. My five year old brain was not much better than it is now. So as the summer hols rushed through, my dear plant wilted and died. And when it did all of them had such a good laugh over it for years and
the greens in me melted into blues.
