‘Grow’, the mother said
The son grew but never tall.
The mother measured his growth
And grew angry with God.
‘Taller son’, the mother cried
Taller, slower but weaker he grew
‘Faster’, the mother pined
He stretched his tendons,
Arched his body into
A well carved image.
Yet incessant she cried ‘taller son’
Till he saw the sky, nevermore earth
He learnt to frown, to fawn
And stood high above her to look down, then
Spat the earth and her
‘Feel the earth, son’ she cried too late
The earth too tall he stood to bend
And she fell weeping at his feet
Sad, the mother’s tears murmured
“Some men grow tall but never grow
Some grow but are seldom tall.”
