On Fortune

Unexpected fortune brings
Greater changes than the
Promises of canvassing politicians
An uncle who slept in cattle sheds
After a short flight overseas
Suddenly cannot bear the heat
Inside his Indian home
Though the fan ‘whirrs’
Even to answer nature’s call
He becomes averse to the Indian way
And as his wealth grows
With each visit from foreign lands
People meet him, with smiles
That tire mighty jaws
When his bags lighter grow
So do the smiles wane.
