The Globe Within

The world’s smaller than I thought.
In the convent smelling of nuns, candles,
I put my little arms of eight
Around the round globe beside Christ.
Catching no eye, except Christ’s,
I raced across forbidden continents,
Smacked my lips, told a girl fat in pigtails
I had seen the world, she gawked.
At thirteen I held the hands of relatives and friends,
The world was a lonely ball,
Tossing in my mind.
At twenty, I find the world in my hands,
A moment, an hour, a day, a month, a year,
Hold experience in equal share.
Sometimes a moment defeats a year.
Sometimes a moment’s experience
Holds greater wisdom than a year.
Having rolled the globe within,
I see the world in my eyes.
